ASOBAGRI is an association located in the municipality of Barillas, Huehuetenango, with an organizational and commercial history of more than 30 years, comprised of 1,341 producers of organic and fair-trade coffee, who produce and export to international markets. The associates live in rural communities of Huehuetenango and Quiché in an area of high biodiversity, with productive potential and generation of wealth in conditions that favor the production of high-quality coffee.
Throughout its history, the association has implemented procedures, administrative and financial policies that guarantee a successful and transparent operation. Since 2001 ASOBAGRI has been subject to independent audits, which is an institutional practice established in the statutes, in addition to audits specific to projects.
The policies are inclusive and encourage the participation of women producers and young people, who are part of the business model and economic dynamics of ASOBAGRI. In this way we contribute to reduce the rates of social exclusion and the reduction of poverty and migration. An important added value to the proposal is the inclusion of 390 women and 157 young people with their own coffee brand, where they can increase their participation in national market niches and international markets in alliance with coffee roasters clients in the United States. The project seeks empowerment and an added value through the direct export of roasted and ground coffee.
The strengthening of ASOBAGRI’s entrepreneurship opens market doors to at least 1,400 producers with an income from coffee exports of USD $ 6,000.00 annually, this impact contributes to the generation of employment and additional income 25% higher if the producers sell their coffee in the local market.
