A Decade of Gender Equity Impact

Over the past ten years, Equal Origins has worked alongside companies, cooperatives, and development partners to advance gender equity in coffee and cocoa. By centering women’s leadership and voice, we strengthen farming families, improve livelihoods, and build more resilient supply chains. This is our gender equity impact in action

In our Decade of Impact Report, we document how gender‑responsive tools and partnerships are changing systems, not just individual projects.

In this report, you’ll see how investments in gender equity lead to measurable gains in income, leadership, and decision‑making power for women and men. As a result, producer organizations are better equipped to meet sustainability goals and respond to market demands.

Measurable Change in Coffee and Cocoa Communities

Earlier efforts measured gender equity mainly through women’s household roles: who decides, who earns, who leads. Equal Origins reframed the starting point. The Gender Equity Index asks whether service systems themselves are structured to deliver equity, making staff practices and policies the first site of transformation and the basis for scalable, systemic change.

Our Impact Map visualizes how this work shows up on the ground. It highlights our impact on women coffee farmers and cocoa farmers through changes in training access, participation in governance, and control over income.

Gender Equity Case Studies

To understand our gender equity impact more concretely, explore our gender equity case studies with partners such as Sucafina, ECOM, and Cooperativa 20 de Abril. These collaborations show how the Gender Equity Index (GEI), Gender Equity Development Plans, and tailored workshops translate into action.

For each case, you’ll see where partners started, what changed inside their organizations, and how those shifts are affecting farmers over time.

Equal Origins helped us move beyond stand-alone programs for women toward embedding a gender lens in everything we do. That shift fits perfectly with the direction we’ve been striving for to achieve our global goals.
